ADVOCACY AND OUTREACH: political action committee

Washington Technology Industry Association Political Action Committee

The goal of the Washington Technology Industry Association PAC is to provide political contributions to candidates who have demonstrated a record of support for the Washington Technology Industry Association’s priority legislative issues.

Political contributions are a valuable tool for any organization that advocates in the public policy sector. Unless those that are elected understand the issues and have a relationship with the Washington Technology Industry Association, its board, members and staff, laws and policy that allow the technology industry to thrive under the right conditions is unlikely. Political contributions should be used in conjunction with lobbying efforts; external and internal communications, grassroots and grasstops issue campaigns and media relations. Without political contributions, these policy levers are less effective.

Candidate Selection Criteria
  • Long-standing record of support for Washington Technology Industry Association priorities
  • Chair or member of a key policy or fiscal committee
  • Strong understanding of technology industry issues
State contribution limits. State legislative candidates can receive up to $700 for the primary and up to $700 for the general election from an individual, political action committee or corporation. Statewide candidates (Governor, Lt. Governor, etc.) can receive up to $1400 for the primary and up to $1400 for the general election. The Public Disclosure Commission adjusts these limits annually for inflation. Other limits apply to contributions to legislative caucuses, local party committees and state party committees.

Candidate Selection Process. The Washington Technology Industry Association VP of Government Affairs forms a list of candidates that fall under the criteria listed above for receiving political contributions. This list is recommended to the members of the Washington Technology Industry Association PAC.

Washington Technology Industry Association PAC members then approve the recommendations, which can be amended by adding or subtracting names or amounts. Membership in the Washington Technology Industry Association PAC requires a minimum $100 annual contribution.

Checks are written and distributed by the Washington Technology Industry Association VP of Government Affairs. Washington Technology Industry Association’s CEO, Washington Technology Industry Association Board members or other designees may distribute political contributions. All political contributions are reported as required by law on monthly reports to the Washington Public Disclosure Commission, located in Olympia and online at www.pdc.wa.gov.
