Speakers

Matt McIlwain, Managing Director, Madrona Venture Group

At Madrona: Matt focuses on a broad range of software-driven companies. He currently serves on the boards of AnimotoApptio, ExtrahopSkytap, Mixpo, Optify, PayScale, Smartsheetand Isilon Systems (ISLN). He was on the boards of iConclude (acquired by Opsware), Farecast (acquired by Microsoft), Performant (acquired by Mercury Interactive), and World Wide Packets (acquired by Ciena), and was actively involved with TeamOn Systems (acquired by Research in Motion). “Overall, venture is currently in a healthy, positive cycle. Madrona continues to believe the market opportunities are exceptional for early-stage, information technology in the Pacific Northwest. We are committed to that strategic focus.”

Past lives: Before joining Madrona in 2000, Matt was vice president of business process for the Genuine Parts Company (NYSE:GPC), a Fortune 250 company. He also was an engagement manager at McKinsey & Company, concentrating on strategy and marketing in technology and financial service industries, and worked in investment banking at CSFB.

Role reversal: If Matt were on the entrepreneur side of the table? “I’d start a new shopping service that helps consumers match their demand for information and intent to buy with a supply of relevant information and offers that consumers can review when they want.”

Extracurricular: Matt co-teaches a course on venture capital in the University of Washington Technology MBA Program. He is a board member of the Washington Technology Industry Association (WTIA) and Villa Academy. He is on Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna’s Technology Advisory Board and is an advisory board member for Families Northwest. Matt enjoys spending time with his family, coaching youth soccer, debating public policy issues and trying out new technologies.

Education: Matt is a graduate of Dartmouth College, holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a master’s in Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

John Hughes, Founder & Principal, GrowthWave

John’s IT career has spanned 27 years, multiple industries (travel, hospitality, banking, insurance, manufacturing and retail) and multiple roles (computer programmer, project manager, IS Director, VP IT Strategy, CIO).  Prior to starting his own business in 2005, John was CIO of Trendwest Resorts, and VP of IT Strategy and Business Alignment for a $1.5B hospitality company.  He holds a technical degree from Clark State and a BS in Computer Management from Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio.

GrowthWave was born out of John’s desire to provide CEOs and CIOs the help they need in building effective IT organizations, enabling IT to become significant contributors to business growth and profitability.  GrowthWave provides IT leadership services including Interim CIO, CIO coaching and a CEO advisory service.

Bill Schrier, Chief Technology Officer, City of Seattle

Bill Schrier is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for the City of Seattle and director of the City's Department of Information Technology (DoIT), reporting directly to Mayor Greg Nickels.

Seattle has a population of about 600,000 residents and a City government of about 11,000 employees. DoIT has 215 full-time employees and a budget of $59 million. Approximately 600 employees work in information technology units throughout City government.As CTO, Schrier is responsible to set standards and policies governing the use of information technology in City government.   As Director of DoIT, Schrier's responsibilities include the city's data center, computing services, information security, web site, municipal television station, community technology, electronic mail system, 800 MHz trunked public safety radio system, telephone network, and data communications network.  The City of Seattle’s website, television station and technology projects have won a number of local and national awards, including “Best of the Web City Portal” in 2001 and 2006 and NATOA’s “Excellence in Government Programming” in 2007 and 2008 for the Seattle Channel.

Tony Tortorice, State CIO & Director of Washington's Department of Information Services

Governor Chris Gregoire named Tony Tortorice as State CIO and Director of Washington’s Department of Information Services (DIS) in May , 2009.  Tony, who started at DIS in July, is a California information technology executive with more than 25 years of IT experience in both the private and public sectors. 

Tortorice was the chief information officer for the Los Angeles Unified School District (the nation’s second largest public school system).  There, he led the recovery of a troubled HR/Payroll implementation.  Tortorice was also the senior IT executive for the Los Angeles Community College District, the largest system of community colleges in the nation.  Before working with the community college system, he was a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Prior to beginning a doctorate program in public administration at the University of Southern California, Tortorice served in the U.S. Navy, where he started his career in IT by installing his command’s first word processing system.  Tortorice holds a master’s degree in systems management from USC, and a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of the State of New York.
