“Software engineers in Seattle stay at companies an average of six months longer than do their counterparts in San Francisco, according to data from online job search giant Indeed. That may seem like a small difference, but it’s actually quite significant when compared to the total time engineers tend to stay with a company. In Seattle, they average 29 months while San Francisco devs stick around for about 23 months. Doug Gray, Indeed’s senior vice president of engineering, shared that finding along with other statistics during an event on attracting tech talent, hosted by the Seattle Chamber of Commerce on Thursday morning.”

“A 360-degree video shot inside the tunnel being built beneath Seattle gives viewers a unique new perspective of what it’s like to bore a 2-mile tube and construct a highway 200 feet underground. As Bertha, the SR 99 tunneling machine heads into the home stretch, viewers can spin and crane their necks in what feels like a 5-minute ride along with the massive machine. Joe Hedges, a project administrator with the Alaskan Way Viaduct Replacement Program, serves as narrator and tour guide. Forty feet behind Bertha’s cutterhead, we see how the 18-ton rings are placed to form the tunnel’s outer wall.”

Seattle and Portland Surge, Creating Rain-Belt Jobs, LinkedIn Finds

Forbes | George Anders | March 8

“Demographers have been fascinated for decades by job-hunters’ steady migration out of the Rust Belt north into the southern Sun Belt. Now, LinkedIn data shows another popular trek with a climate twist: people from across the United States are heading to Seattle and Portland, Oregon, so they can take up new jobs in what might be called the Rain Belt…The more likely explanation is that booming tech economies, plus lots of unmet demand for teachers, nurses, doctors and other health-care workers, keeps pulling mobile workers from higher-cost cities such as San Francisco and New York. Moving to the Pacific Northwest becomes a way of  securing a strong career and a bearable cost of living.”

“Downtown Seattle and South Lake Union are the next neighborhoods where Mayor Ed Murray wants to allow taller buildings in exchange for help with affordable housing. Under the proposed upzone, new projects would be allowed to climb one or several stories higher, depending on location. In some cases, projects would be allowed more floor area. Besides downtown and South Lake Union, the upzone would also include a sliver of industrial and commercial property between South Charles Street and Interstate 90.”
