Leading the way in economic growth

Washington state has been a driver of technology innovation for decades, with many transformative technologies built within the state leading to significant economic growth regionally and internationally. Several advanced technologies will soon be the catalyst for similar economic growth and global competitiveness, making now a critical time for focus on these specific sectors. WTIA Advanced Technology Cluster will build connectivity and collaboration across blockchain technologies and quantum computing.

Achieving our goals

WTIA Advanced Technology Cluster will foster the growth of Advanced Technologies in Washington, with a focus on quantum computing (“Quantum”) and distributed ledger technologies (“Blockchain”). This Cluster is part of the Department of Commerce’s broader “Cluster” economic development strategy. Key focuses include:

Mapping the Advanced Technology ecosystem

Advancing a supportive
policy environment

Creating
strong partnerships

Attracting and
accelerating startups

Building a diverse workforce including women,
BIPOC, and other underrepresented groups

To achieve these goals, the Advanced Technology Cluster will create forums to convene key stakeholders across the Cluster, build partnerships with policymakers to create a supportive regulatory environment, grow startup accelerators to support Advanced Technology startups, and chart a strategy to enable the long-term growth of the sector.

What is a “Cluster?”

The Advanced Technology Cluster follows the “Cluster” framework, which is an economic development methodology that convenes startups, enterprises, academia, investors, and government to grow an industry sector. The Washington State Department of Commerce has funded five high-growth industry clusters to ensure the long-term growth of the state and region.

About the Cascadia Blockchain Council

The Cascadia Blockchain Council (CBC) will form the foundation for the Advanced Technology Cluster’s blockchain work. Priorities for the CBC include:

Proactively communicating with and engaging blockchain companies and stakeholders.
Providing benefits and services designed to support the growth of blockchain companies.
Advocating for a strong, supportive regulatory environment at the city, state, and federal level.
Documenting, benchmarking, and publishing blockchain application impacts and outcomes—targeted to investors, entrepreneurs, and policymakers.
Convening events to share lessons learned and successful use cases of blockchain technology across the economy.
Maintaining an active database of blockchain-related companies and activity in Washington state.
