Career Choices of Millennials and Baby Boomers

There was an interesting article in The Seattle Times recently about some of the different choices Millennials are making regarding their career plans.

What struck me in this article is the assertion that Millennial Women are lowering their expectations of their careers right when they leave college. The article asserts that Millennial women are intentionally choosing their careers to accommodate family and children instead of the Baby Boomer approach which was to assume you could “have it all.” This has an effect on tech companies who are planning to hire more Millennials.  I have a hard time with generalizations, so with that said, I looked at the stats in the article:

“Women’s expectations also have declined: 66 percent of millennial women said they expected their careers to be equal to those of their spouses, compared with 79 percent of baby boomers. Three-quarters of millennial women said they expected to succeed in combining their careers and family life, but that is a drop from the 86 percent of baby-boomer women who said the same.”

So I wondered….are women in this generation so different than the women who went before them? I don’t have an answer for that. But it does cause me to pause and get curious about the conversations Millennial women are having about equality in work. From my personal experience, I do know that in the Baby Boomer generation (I am the last year considered to be a Baby Boomer), we had a much more rigid or linear view of work.  The article says, “… we found that 37 percent of millennial women and 42 percent of those already married planned to interrupt their career for family. That compared with 28 percent of Generation X women and 17 percent of baby boomers.”
