Who Cares About Washington’s Tech Scene?

A couple of days ago, our friends at GeekWire posted a video to YouTube, in which they interviewed passersby in Central Park to see if anyone out there had anything to say about Seattle’s tech scene.

“No one really associates technological innovation with Seattle,” one said. Almost no one knew that behemoths Amazon and Microsoft are based in the Puget Sound, let alone that we have one of the world’s top three public universities and a vibrant mix of startups and technological innovators.

We might ask: Who cares whether the average New Yorker knows how great we are? Don’t we have enough growth-related challenges to deal with?

Thanks to our inaugural FullConTech conference, we have an answer: recruiters, hiring managers, startups raising venture capital, and anyone who wants to see our region’s economy continue to grow. Multiple teams urged us to work toward a more cohesive and visible regional brand – one that showcases innovation across our state, including but not limited to Seattle itself.

This is just one of the top recommendations to come out of FullConTech. In its first year, the conference attracted participants from Bellingham to Olympia to Spokane and everywhere in between. We brought in diverse speakers and facilitators as well as participants from established companies to fresh startups, educators from K-12 to top universities, public officials and policy experts, and community leaders with a stake in our region’s future growth. Together, they formed teams and came up with 12 “plays” to guide our future activities.

Today, we release those plays to the public.

In the 2015 FullConTech Playbook, you will find all 12 of these plays, as well as the 47 specific ideas participants came up with for addressing the big issues in small, tangible ways. You can also read more about the top ideas we at WTIA commit to leading or supporting in the coming year – including an effort to brand the Puget Sound as a great place to work, live, and start a business.
