How TAF STEM Academy has Helped me
Hello readers! My name is Torri Brown, and I am a TAF STEM Academy Junior. TAF Academy is a foundation-ran school in Kent that focuses on teaching future generations using STEM. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. This means that we are given challenges that allow us to research, engineer, and create our solutions using the technology provided for us. Through this system, me and my classmates are being prepared for adulthood through the processes of using creativity and education to expand our knowledge of the world around us.
As a previously home schooled student, I have had the pleasure of being introduced to the outside world from an intellectual perspective at TAF. Before I went into high school, I was very shy and was always nervous to have my voice heard. Now I can definitely say that TAF has changed me into the outgoing and intelligent young woman that I am today! I have been on a trip to Japan where I was able to practice Japanese and make international friendships. I have also had the great pleasure of going to several science fairs across the state and making mentors that will last a lifetime through STEM Expo, TAF’s latest science fair exhibition. I have met scientists, doctors, and several adults who have pursued their STEM career of choice, and the information on college preparedness has been exceptional! I was even the youngest speaker at the Seattle Town Hall Ignite Event, where I spoke about teaching STEM to the youth through sci-fi and transhumanism! These kinds of opportunities aren’t always available to my generation, and this had made me very grateful for the kind hearts of the teachers and staff at TAF Academy.
If there was one thing that I would say is my biggest takeaway about TAF Academy for me, it would be that I have been prepared to be outspoken and confident. Everyday there are opportunities in class to have deep ethical discussions with classmates and present our ideas to the public. We are taught to be strong and wise when presented with challenges, and to always be respectful while doing it! I am very thankful that I have had the numerous chances to try my hand at leadership and encourage students to become more interested in STEM by representing myself as a TAF Tiger!
