“The Alaskan Way Viaduct has been an eyesore along Seattle’s waterfront since the 1950s. But over the next couple of years, that will all change. The replacement tunnel will open, the northern half of the viaduct will be torn down, and redevelopment will begin. The Downtown Seattle Association put out a video showing what the waterfront may eventually look like.”

“With cranes in the background further building out Seattle’s booming tech sector, two seaplanes landed on Lake Union Wednesday, including one carrying Canadian officials from Vancouver, B.C. Waiting on the dock were Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, Microsoft President Brad Smith and more dignitaries excited about a new partnership and transportation connection between the two cities. Starting Thursday, Seattle-based Kenmore Air and Vancouver’s Harbour Air will begin offering seaplane flights aimed at providing a shorter commute alternative for neighbors who are increasingly doing business together. Affectionately dubbed the “nerd bird,” it’s hoped the route will attract tech workers and researchers shuttling to offices and institutions in both cities.”

“Top athletes may get much of the attention when it comes to signing days and committing to a university to continue playing a particular sport. But in Seattle on Monday, the spotlight was on students who would be applying their talents in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) at some of the top technical schools in Washington state and across the country. The Boeing Co. presented the inaugural event at the Museum of Flight, where 49 high school seniors — one from each legislative district across Washington — were invited to take part in a ceremony attended by elected officials and business and community leaders. The students were signing STEM Letters of Intent, and had been recruited by the Washington independent nonprofit Washington STEM and applied through STEM education resource STEM Premier.”

“It’s not uncommon to see brand new commercial jets flying in and out of Paine Field, just north of Seattle, defying rain and low visibility that define the region…Now an entrepreneur is getting a chance to build the airport’s first passenger terminal, betting travelers in Seattle’s rapidly expanding suburbs will use it for short-haul trips instead of fighting traffic and long lines at SeaTac International, one of the country’s busiest hubs. Brett Smith’s company is investing about $40 million to build the terminal. Smith is the founder and chief executive officer of Propeller Investments LLC., which secured a 50-year agreement with Snohomish County three years ago through a local subsidiary to build and operate the terminal in Everett.”

“This week’s going to be a doozy in the Seattle tech scene. On tap are a trio of IPOs from Washington state companies — two from the Seattle area and a third from Vancouver, Wash. And if that weren’t enough, many of the region’s biggest homegrown companies, as well as several tech giants with major Seattle presences will release their latest quarterly financials this week. Here’s a cheat sheet for all the big happenings this week, and what to watch.”
