“Seattle is the hub for Pacific Northwest entrepreneurial innovation. As you walk down the street, you’ll see Starbucks, a company founded here. Look up to the sky and you may notice a Boeing plane fly by – another company founded here. It’s no wonder entrepreneurs are flocking to Seattle to find talent, inspiration and a vibrant startup community. Though there were many places I considered building GiftStarter.com, I chose Seattle for the countless resources and benefits it provides entrepreneurs.”

Lynnwood Eager for Growth and Transformation that Light-Rail Station Will Bring

Seattle Times | Mike Lindblom | November 3

“Whether the future Sound Transit light-rail network moves the masses, or just empty railcars, will depend a great deal on Lynnwood. This northern suburb’s transit center is supposed to handle an estimated 36,000 daily riders coming or going on light rail — just for the Northgate-Lynnwood line voters previously approved. That’s about the same as current demand for the new University of Washington and Capitol Hill stations combined. And the stakes go even higher in the $54 billion Sound Transit 3 ballot measure, which includes a line to Everett by 2036.”

“Seattle Tunnel Partners’ Bertha tunneling machine passed the one-mile mark Thursday as it bored a hole 200 feet below the streets of downtown Seattle. Bertha has less than 4,000 feet to go before it emerges near the Space Needle. After digging under First Avenue for about two blocks, the gigantic drilling device is at its deepest point below ground and will veer east toward Second Avenue. The machine resumed its work Monday after a nine-day break for maintenance crews to replace about 100 of the 700 cutterhead tools in hyperbaric conditions.”

Fast Ferry on Ballot for Kitsap County Voters

“A high-speed ferry system is being proposed out of Kitsap County so residents can better access the high paying jobs in Seattle – without dealing with the housing costs…Kitsap County voters now have a chance to launch a walk-on only ferry system that would make the crossing in under half an hour, but at the cost of a sales tax increase. Proposition 1 calls for a .3 percent sales tax increase that would raise $12 million annually. It would connect ports in Kingston, Bremerton and Southworth to downtown Seattle.”

Bellevue Now Washington’s Biggest Majority-Minority City

Seattle Times | Gene Balk | October 31

“Bellevue has become a majority-minority city, according to data released last month by the U.S. Census Bureau. The non-Hispanic white population dipped below the 50 percent mark — though just barely — in 2015. ‘It was both not a surprise, and a surprise,’ said Mark Manuel, the city’s diversity outreach and engagement program administrator. ‘We’ve been paying attention to the demographic data, so we knew that it was heading in this direction … the surprise was in how rapidly it happened.’”
