“Facebook may have been born in a Harvard dorm room but all things considered, the Ivy League isn’t as influential in tech as you might think. That’s one of the takeaways from a new study of the most influential universities in the tech world from career website Paysa. Researchers analyzed data from over 286,000 resumes of employees at the country’s 100 biggest tech companies and what they found was pretty telling. When it comes to pure numbers, the University of Washington in Seattle takes top honors with the highest number of employees at major tech companies.”

“Washington colleges and universities are ramping up their offerings in cybersecurity, a field that’s in such high demand that many jobs go unfilled. “Right now there are two jobs for every one person employed — the opportunities are really amazing,” said Barbara Endicott-Popovsky, executive director of the Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity at the University of Washington Bothell. In Washington, three community colleges — Whatcom, Highline and Columbia Basin in Pasco — along with the University of Washington, and the nonprofit City University of Seattle, are federally recognized centers for cyberdefense education. The recognition comes from the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.”

“The wait is over – fast ferry service between Seattle and Bremerton begins July 10, just eight months after Kitsap voters approved the proposition to connect three Kitsap cities to Seattle with fast-ferry service. The faster ferry creates more options for the 14,000 Kitsap County residents who commute to Seattle for work. It also opens the door to more job opportunities for the other thousands of residents who previously did not commute on the hour-long ferry between the two cities. Many people also think it will increase the economic opportunity in Kitsap County by bringing more residents and talent to the region.”

“In a meeting with top tech execs Monday, President Donald Trump promised to help them “get the people you want.”…On the heels of that meeting, the American Immigration Council released a new report that gives weight to the industry’s stance. According to the report, immigrants accounted for about 20-25 percent of the country’s science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) workers in 2015, depending on how that category is defined…As of 2015, 27.2 percent of Washington state’s STEM workers were foreign-born, according to the report.”
