Seattle in the Spotlight: September 15 – 21
Seattle’s Expanded Pike Place Market Has Room for Everyone
Washington Post | Rebekah Denn | September 21
“Pike Place Market has been one of Seattle’s main tourist attractions for much of its 110-year history, despite one oddity: It has never been as functional for visitors as for the people who live here…That’s changed, thanks to the June opening of a $74 million addition, the landmark’s first expansion in 40 years and the last piece of the revitalization plan that saved it from demolition in the 1970s. With 30,000 square feet of new open space, there’s finally some elbow room at the market, providing new ways to enjoy it rather than struggling through like a salmon swimming upstream. Highlights include an outdoor pavilion with broad Douglas fir counters and room for 47 new farm stands and crafts stalls, plus a new Producers Hall of restaurants and shops.”
These 21 Puget Sound-Area High Schools Are Ranked among The Best in the U.S.
Puget Sound Business Journal | Emily Parkhurst | September 19
“As more and more people move to the Puget Sound region, schools are dealing with massive increases in enrollment. That puts additional pressure on programs that may already be feeling the pinch of tightened budgets. But there are 21 schools throughout the Puget Sound region — which we define as stretching from Tacoma to Everett — that made a recent list of the best high schools in the country. Good schools can impact home prices and the desirability of a neighborhood.”

“At the future Northgate Station, work continues on the elevated station and new concrete guideways where light-rail trains will pause and turn back toward downtown Seattle, when service reaches Northgate in 2021. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Seattle, spoke Tuesday about her support for $1.1 billion in federal aid, to help fund a $2.9 billion Northgate-to-Lynnwood extension, approved in a 2008 local ballot measure. The Trump administration has proposed canceling proposed rail megaproject grants across the country, arguing that transit is a local matter. Since then, the Senate Appropriations Committee on July 27 voted 31-0 to continue the grants, which forwards the matter to the House.”
Photos from GIX Launch: New Tech Institute Helps Elevates Seattle Region as Global Tech Hub
GeekWire | Taylor Soper | September 15
“The Seattle region and the state of Washington just got another big boost to elevate its reputation as a global technology hub. The Global Innovation Exchange, a new U.S.-China graduate tech institute, opened its doors on Thursday at a launch event that welcomed well-known dignitaries, politicians, venture capitalists, business executives, and other leaders from the area who gathered at the new 3-story, 100,000-square foot GIX building in Bellevue, Wash. The celebration marked a culmination of nearly five years since the idea for GIX first came about, ultimately bringing together two leading academic institutions — the University of Washington in Seattle and Tsinghua University in Beijing — and a founding corporate partner in Microsoft (which put $40 million toward the program) to help create a first-of-its-kind graduate school designed to train students in entrepreneurship and encourage new ideas around real-world challenges.”
