Summer 2016 Travel Bucket List: The Best Tech Tourism Spots on the West Coast

5 tech-tourism hotspots to visit this summer

We all have our personal travel bucket lists, filled to the brim with places we want to explore, eat, drink and experience. In a region of the country so driven by technology and innovation, there’s no better time to experience the ever-growing tech side that the Northwest has to offer. Some places are well-known, and others are hidden gems.

Apple HQ – Cupertino, California

Most everyone would agree that Apple’s HQ Campus is one of the greatest tech spaces in the entire Northwest region. This massive, 32-acre campus is home to thousands of employees with every perk under the sun. Check out the Apple Store at 1 Infinite Loop for all-things Apple and fun souvenirs. Fun fact: Apple is in the process of building a second office space, Apple Campus 2, shaped like a giant spaceship.

Microsoft HQ – Redmond, Washington

Microsoft Corporation is a definite go-to on your Northwest tech tour. As one of the most powerful tech companies in American history since 1975, it’s worth a trip to Redmond to get your picture in front of the iconic “Microsoft” sign. If you want to fill your day, check out the Microsoft Visitor Center. This state-of-the-art center allows you to take a self-guided tour and experience hands-on exhibits of the latest and greatest the company has to offer.

HP Garage – Palo Alto, California

Also known as “the birthplace of Silicon Valley,” this iconic garage was home to the creation of HP, led by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard. This spot is where they created their first product, which was later sold to Walt Disney Studios. A private museum inside—not open for public tours—it’s a must-see on your tech tour from the sidewalk and driveway.

Computer History Museum – Mountain View, California

Think you know everything there is to know about computers? Think again. By spending a day at the Computer History Museum, you’ll learn about the 2000-year-old history (yes, you read this correctly) and experience how the revolution of the internet came to be through nineteen galleries. It doesn’t just stop there; you can learn how computer hackers got their start and even watch a live computer demo in the Demo Lab.

Pioneer Square – Seattle, Washington

While you’re on your Northwest journey, make sure to check out Seattle’s first neighborhood called Pioneer Square. This richly historic place is filled with beauty and culture, and was the first part of the foundation of tech-filled Seattle—and boasts a number technology headquarters, to boot. Take a stroll through Pioneer Park to see the Tlingit totem pole, and watch the clock at King Street Station, which served as a gateway for many travelers in the early 1900’s.
