“While there is no vaccine to prevent infection or medicine to treat it, many local organizations and researchers are working on it. Other organizations, such as SpringStar and Spokane-based Sterling International, are focusing on ways to combat mosquitos directly.

SpringStar developed the trap with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It attracts female mosquitoes by posing as a prime site to lay their eggs. The trap is about the size of a five-gallon buck and once the females enter, they become stuck to a glue pad inside and die.”

“Pinterest on Tuesday announced plans to open a new office in downtown Seattle, marking the San Francisco company’s first engineering expansion outside of the Bay Area.

As cost of living becomes more expensive in the Bay Area and throughout Silicon Valley, more companies are opening offices in the Puget Sound region to recruit workers who, for example, want to spend a lower portion of income on housing cost.”

“Since 2010, West Coast tech hubs have seen more than half of the $346.5 billion of total U.S. venture capital investment in that time, according to a new report from Seattle-based PitchBook…

The report, which looks at activity through June 30 of this year, ranks the Seattle MSA, which includes Tacoma, Bellevue, and other burgs in the Puget Sound region, as the sixth largest VC ecosystem in the country. Since 2010, VCs have done some 1,717 deals, investing $8.5 billion, or about 2.5 percent of the U.S. total, as calculated by PitchBook. About a quarter of Seattle’s six-year total, $2.1 billion, was invested in 2015 across 352 deals.”

 

 

Valve Leases Nine Floors in Planned Skyscraper, More Than Doubling Its Headquarters Size

“Gaming company Valve has leased approximately 225,000 square feet in the Lincoln Square expansion office tower that is under construction in downtown Bellevue, Wash., more than doubling the size of its headquarters in the Eastside city.

The long-reported lease was confirmed Wednesday by Kemper Development Co., which is developing the office building. Valve will take floors 11 through 19 in the 31-story, 710,000-square-foot building, and it will move in May 2017.

“This lease puts Valve on the list of the largest companies in terms of office space in downtown Bellevue,” Kemper President Jim Melby said in a statement.”
