“For the best internship experience at a tech company with an interview of only average difficulty, pick Facebook. The social network tops the 2015 ‘25 Highest Rated Companies for Internships’ rankings from Glassdoor. The newly released report, timed for when college students are thinking about summer internships, puts Facebook in the top spot for the second year running. (Facebook debuted in the number one position last year.) Microsoft, which in 2014 was ranked seventh, dropped to 13th in the 2015 report. But it still maintained an overall rating of 4.3 on a five-point scale where 5 is interns reporting they were ‘very satisfied.’ ”

“Microsoft is backing a Bellevue startup – founded by a Microsoft veteran – that’s helping big companies deploy and run Microsoft’s Lync communications platform. Unify Square is announcing today that it raised $8.2 million from Microsoft and angel investors, including former Yahoo, IBM and Ariba executives. It will use the funding to accelerate product development and partnerships with other vendors while expanding its global reach. Unify Square is led by people who helped Microsoft get its start in unified communications. At the startup, they now build their own software-as-a-service products, such as Lync analytics and monitoring tools. “This funding and especially the deepening partnership with Microsoft here allow us to take our formula – our products, our solutions, our services – to basically the entire, worldwide set of Lync customers,” said Sonu Aggarwal, Unify Square’s founder and chief executive….Unify Square has 90 employees, including about 30 in Bellevue. The rest are in Germany, Switzerland, Singapore, India and the United Kingdom. With the new funding the headcount should double in Bellevue and overall, Aggarwal said.”

“One in four workers have signed such agreements in their lifetime, according to a new working paper, and 12.3 percent of them are bound by one right now…The research, by economists Evan Starr at the University of Illinois and Norman Bishara and JJ Prescott of the University of Michigan…showed that including non-compete clauses in hiring contracts is most widespread in information fields like engineering and architecture, where 30.1 percent of workers had signed one…Starr found in a previous paper that in states with stronger enforcement of non-compete agreements, employees who’ve signed them tend to receive more training, which suggests that non-competes can serve as an incentive to invest in people.  That training is a good thing for employees earning potential, although that’s not very useful if they can’t leave for a better offer.”
