The business and employee-oriented social networking site has called these 20 jobs the “most promising” of 2017. Each one was selected on a score-based criteria across five areas:

— Salary (30 percent)

Seattle’s ‘thriving’ indie game community gets creative at the Global Game Jam

Clare McGrane | GeekWire | 23 January 2017

“…Schearer also said Seattle is “one of the best places to be an indie game developer,” in large part because giants like Nintendo of America, Microsoft Xbox, and PC gaming platform Valve are all based in the area.

So what can gamers do if they want to support local indie devs? Schearer said attending indie game showcases, like the Seattle Indies Expo and the Indie Megabooth at PAX, is a good starting point. Why men don’t want the jobs done mostly by women

Claire Cain Miller | The Seattle Times | 21 January 2017

“It hasn’t been a great time to be a man without a job.

The jobs that have been disappearing, like machine operator, are predominantly those that men do. The occupations that are growing, like health aide, employ mostly women.

One solution is for the men who have lost jobs in factories to become health aides. But while more than a fifth of American men aren’t working, they aren’t running to these new service-sector jobs. Why? They require very different skills, and pay a lot less.

They’re also seen as women’s work, which has always been devalued in the U.S. labor market.”

Amazon is going to train thousands of veterans for jobs in the tech industry

Trevor Mogg | Fox News | 20 January 2017

“Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in 2016 revealed his wish to hire 25,000 veterans and military spouses over the next five years, as well as to train 10,000 more in cloud computing skills. On Thursday, the Seattle-based company signed an agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor to move the plan forward with the creation of a registered apprenticeship program.

It’s all part of the Joining Forces initiative set up by Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, and will help ease veterans back into the nation’s workforce.

Those who join the program will take a 16-week technical training program and also get a 12-month paid apprenticeship with the web giant, according to the Seattle Times. It’s hoped that a number of the placements will result in full-time positions with Amazon, though participants would also be able to make use of their new skills at other employers, too.”
