Redmond-based Kymeta’s vision of the internet-connected world is flat

Rachel Lerman | The Seattle Times | 7 March 2017

“Big, spinning satellite dishes that adorn boats and military trucks, connecting them to the internet wherever they roam, are heavy, clunky and not ideal for the future of the connected car.

That’s where Redmond-based Kymeta comes in with its flat-panel antenna technology, meant to bring fast, satellite-transmitted internet connections to cars, trains and boats using a lightweight antenna.

Kymeta announced Tuesday an expanded partnership with satellite company Intelsat that will allow customers to purchase internet data plans directly through Kymeta. That means when the company officially launches sales of its antennas in May, customers will be able to mount the small antennas and sign up for internet service all from the same company.

The service, called KALO, will be sold much like a cellular plan. Intelsat has 50 satellites that can transmit to the Earth, all roughly the size of a school bus.”

How Dragon-Slaying Stories Will Help You Get The Job

Liz Ryan | Forbes.com | 7 March 2017

“What is a Dragon-Slaying Story? It’s a quick, powerful story about a time when you did the right thing at work and made a positive difference.

We have not traditionally been trained to tell stories in our resumes or on a job interview, and that is a shame.

Stories convey way more useful information than our rote answers to brainless job interview questions ever could.

Watch how Sandra, a Customer Service job-seeker, answers an interview question with a story.”

As tensions grow over Snap’s presence in Venice Beach, company expands in Seattle

Jillian Stamhper | GeekWire | 2 March 2017

“In response to the protests, Snap said in a statement that it is looking to expand outside of the area.

“We don’t just have our headquarters here; many of us also call Venice home,” Snap said. “We’ve been very grateful to be a part of this creative community for over the last four years and we’ve worked closely with local schools and nonprofits to be a good neighbor. No one could have anticipated how quickly we’ve grown, and we have already begun focusing our future growth outside of Venice.”

“Outside of Venice” means, in part, Seattle. GeekWire reported in January that Snap has leased another 50,000 square feet of office space in the city, adding to the 8,000 square feet it already has occupied.

Snap isn’t exactly straying far from its roots with the company’s Seattle offices, which are across the street from Pike Place Market, Seattle’s equivalent of the Venice Beach boardwalk.”
