Who’s Hiring: Ikea, other retailers look for help during holiday shopping season

“Ikea is hiring 50 workers to staff up the retailer’s new store in Renton.
Ikea is hiring in the midst of the holiday retail hiring season, with companies such as Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN), Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN) to UPS and FedEx (NYSE: FDX), all adding workers to accommodate holiday shoppers. Washington state retailers are predicting a good year and expect to need 1,800 more workers than last year.”

Amazon Has Big Plans To Expand Its Online Tickets Business

“Amazon launched its online ticketing business just last year, but it already has plans to expand it in Europe, Asia and potentially the U.S, according to a series of job listings posted recently.
The hiring efforts are part of a new initiative to “position Amazon Tickets as the world’s premier destination for purchasing tickets,” according to one posting. The job listings also hint at plans to integrate ticket sales into the Prime membership program with something Amazon is calling Prime Tickets, the details of which were not laid out.”

Study: Seattle is middle of the pack in tech sector job growth

“Seattle has been consistently ranked as one of the best tech markets in the country recently, but by at least one metric, the Emerald City isn’t at the top of the heap.
A recent report from real estate company CBRE ranked the top 30 tech cities in terms of job growth and office rents, and Seattle came in at number 12. Some of the usual suspects sit atop the ranks, such as San Francisco, Silicon Valley, New York and Austin. But also ahead of Seattle in terms of tech sector job growth are places like Phoenix, Charlotte and Indianapolis.”

“A person with a Master of Science in Data Science can find work in some surprising industries and locations, according to a report from Southern Methodist University.
“When people think of data science they correctly associate it with big data and usually think of Silicon Valley,” wrote the report’s authors. “But the alternatives to ‘The Valley’ are surprising, and trends in this field (like many others) are skewing to disruption.”
